Zion and First Baptist Church of Marietta joined in prayer for historic Founder's Day Prayer Wal

Marietta, GA – March 30, 2015 – Celebrating a rich heritage, Zion Baptist Church Marietta hosted a “Unity Prayer Walk,” Saturday, April 11, 2015 to begin a year-long commemoration of Zion’s 149-150th Anniversary celebrations through 2016. The Prayer Walk commenced at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 148 Church Street, with an opening prayer service until 9:30.a.m. Symbolizing the birth of Zion organized April 8, 1866, from First Baptist Church, members ans pastors joined hands, two-by-two on a short walk to Old Zion Heritage Museum, Zion’s original sanctuary, now a national historical landmark for prayer service. The sacred service continued as Zion invited the community to join with surrounding churches in the Zion Baptist Church Chapel from 11:00 a. m. – 2:00 p. m.

Zion Baptist Church, led by Pastor Harris T. Travis since 1992, has a rich heritage as the oldest African American Baptist church in historic Marietta, GA. Zion traces its history back to Dicey, the first slave who was allowed to attend services at Marietta First Baptist in 1836. In 1866, 88 former slaves founded Zion after asking for permission to leave First Baptist. The group saved and collected $70 to buy the 40x60 foot property at the corner of Lemon and Haynes streets in downtown Marietta. That church, which was built in 1888, burned down and was rebuilt and still stands today and is now our Old Zion Heritage Museum. Zion’s theme for this year-long celebration is “Remembering the Past, Rejoicing in the Present and Ready for the Future!” Check out our Events page for more details on upcoming ZBC150 events!
